Excelent value for money
After several months of research I bit the bullet and bought the D60 due mainly to the build quality and reputation of Nikon. This camera just seems so "right" when you pick it up. The main contenders on my short list were the Nikon d60, Canon 1000d and Sony a200 as they were closest match in my budget. I could possibly have been seduced by a Canon 450d but in the end it was over £100 more than the other three at best. The Sony came in about £40 less but was always a distant third choice anyway. It's just not a Nikon or Canon. Both the 1000d and a200 I'm sure would be excelent choices but image quality of the Nikon when coupled with the 18-55 vr kit lens wins by a whisker. Canon's Live View may be a plus for some but it is poorly implemented and in my opinion not needed on a dslr. I honestly feel that if live view is the most important factor you should be buying a point and shoot. For me the downside of the other two cameras was their plasticky feel and in the Sony's case more so and slower autofucusing. I realise the Sony has a built in focus motor but since I don't have a collection of Nikon lenses this won't bother me. The lesser three point autofucus is made up for on the nikon by it's perfect metering which gets it right every time. The 18-55mm kit lens is great for walkabout but maybe a little short for portrait work. Results are superbly sharp though and it works well in low light. The built in flash is much better than I expected. Red eye reduction really works too. The menus are simple to navigate and generally the camera is very user friendly. This may be an entry level dslr but it certainly packs plenty of bangs for bucks. If you are looking for your first dslr save yourself the time researching and get this one. You won't be dissapointed.

Look at Amazon First!
Can you buy this excellent camera at most reputable photography outlets? Probably yes. But can you buy this body with this lens at this price with free delivery and £30 cashback from Nikon anywhere else? Probably not. Amazon tracking let me know to the very second when my package arrived at and left the local distribution centre. Well done Amazon!

Slight niggle - it didn't register with this buyer that memory card was not included in package - so there was a delay in being able to use camera. Bit like the old "batteries not included scenario" with kids' toys in times past (there is a lithium battery included with camera!)

D60 or EOS1000
Had a toss up recently between this and the Canon EOS1000D. Bought the D40 for my daughter and its a cracking little camera out of the box. Felt good, solid, great quality.

So in the end I plumped for the Canon, just to have a change. The second I took it out the box my mistake was evident - the difference in quality feel to even the D40 is unbelievable. Plasticy feel, cheep non tactile buttons, poor layout on the rear. I was gutted. Straight back in the box and straight back. tata.

So just got the D60 and again, out the box the quality just feels right. Solid, great feel, buttons just right. The D60 is also a slight step up in feel from the D40 with more metal parts and a great VR lens. I'm sure, in the end, there will be a gnats whisker between the actually pictures between this and the EOS 1000D, but in the end, this is the camera I'd rather have in my hand, any day.

Now, just need to learn how to use it.....

What a great piece of kit
what a great piece of kit.
im 18 and ive been taking pictures for as long as i can remember (my mum and dad are both photographers), i have a nikon d3 and a d2x, but i needed something that was cheaper, that i could take to locations where the camera might encounter the odd knock! i had the nikon d40 when that first came out and thought it was a little cracker, but no longer needed it, so ebay it was for that.

but i can safely say ill be using it alot more then i thought, the VR kit lens is great (although im using the 55-200 onit atm) but for £340 (what i paid) this camera AMAZING, ive used camera more ten times that and recieved results far less satisfying,

the camera is light, and VERY well made, it feels like your harding...urm a brick?, its so sterdy and "together"

liveview?, well if you want liveview, you shouldnt be buying a DSLR, i heard in reviews that the autofocus was slow, its slower then my other cameras yeah!, but its no where near slow.

well more £340, id gladly pay alot more for it.

trust me, beginer-intermetate camera users, or pros looking for a light small simple DSLR for tough locations, BUY THIS!

Perfect for the transition from compact camera to digital SLR
Have had the D60+VR lens for a couple of days now and am thoroughly impressed. I did a lot of research online before buying and finally went for a Nikon after using a friend's D300 at a wedding. The controls are intuitive, the image quality and vibration reduction features excellent. The display at the back really helps the newcomer to dSLRs understand the implications and relationships between shutter speed and aperture, white balance etc and there is a handy help function which gives basic explanations, making dSLR photography highly intuitive and the learning curve very steep but easy. I bought the camera with a Transcend 16gb class 6 card from Amazon and the write speed is more than adequate. Highly recommended.
