Real Performance and Value for money
This external disc drive is real value for money compared to any other disc drive using Firewire connectivity. Firstly it's alot cheaper then other Firewire drives and for serious amounts of data transfer Firewire connections are the best. They can sustain 30% faster transfer rates than USB (check the Seagate Website for detailed specification). If you don't have Firewire on your PC don't worry becuase it comes with USB 2.0 connectivity as well.
The main reason I bought this product was that I needed a backup solution for my PC and the extra disc space is a bonus, and it does deliver on all fronts.
Extremely easy to set up. Just plug in the power then connect to the PC, and hey presto, it loads it's own backup software automatically and you have 1TB of extra disc showing on your PC in a couple of minutes.
The disc drive automatically stops and starts when my PC is switched on or off so it can be left plugged in, unlike older models.
The backup software is easy to use too. Once started the image software immediately saw the 3 partitions on my "C" drive and backed them all up in case I need to do a full restore. Then with the other backup software you can do incremental backups of specified directories of your choice at a time of your choosing. On the first night this took about 2 hours to back up 126Gb. But on subsequent nights it only take 2 minutes because it then only copies the files that have changed since the previous backup - very quick and clever. If you need to do a backup outside the normal backup time, just press the button in the case of the disc drive - no problem.
I have also noticed that if you delete a file on your main disc drive, the backup software moves it's copy into a different directory on the external disc drive. So if I delete something by mistake and cleared out the recycle bin as well, I can still restore it from the external drive - exactly what you need.
Another useful feature is that you can tell the device how much room to use for the backup images so that it does take up too much disc capacity and you can use the rest of the drive for other data storage.
With a 7,200 rpm disc I'm delighted with the performance of the disc so far, and I can sleep easy knowing that all my data is backed up safely.
With a 5 year warranty from Seagate thrown in I can't fault this product.
